Active COVID cases rise slightly to over 55,000 with 6,385 new infections

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s active COVID-19 case count rose slightly to 55,260 with 6,385 new infections, after several days of continuous decline due to high recovery rates.

Numbers from the Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday, May 13, showed that only 4,289 recoveries were tallied, for a total recovery count of 1,050,643.  Another 107 deaths pushed the death toll to 18,821.

All in all, the country has 1,124,724 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Most of the patients or 93.3 percent of active cases have still exhibited mild symptoms only, while 2.2 percent were asymptomatic.  At least 1.9 percent of the patients currently have severe symptoms while 1.4 percent are in critical condition.

Of the 44,345 tests conducted since May 11, DOH said that 13.6 percent tested positive.  In terms of COVID-19 bed capacity in the National Capital Region which suffered a surge in cases from March to April, 64 percent of intensive care unit beds have been utilized while 46 percent of isolation beds are occupied.

DOH said that 20 duplicate entries were removed from the total case count, of which 18 are recoveries. Also, 59 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified to deaths after further validation.

All laboratories were operational since May 11, and all were also able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS).
