Army says NPA made bombs in abandoned Ormoc City camp
TACLOBAN CITY—A camp believed to be where New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas make bombs was found abandoned by government soldiers in Ormoc City, Leyte province on Monday (April 26).
A surrendered rebel, identified only as “Saag,” informed authorities about the camp at the village of Patag, acccording to Capt. Karahudin Cadil, information officer of the 802nd Infantry Brigade based in Camp Jorges Downes in Cadiz City.
Saag on Monday surrendered to officials of the 14th Infantry Battalion in their camp in MacArthur town, also in Leyte.
He provided information about the camp where NPA allegedly makes improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The discovery of the camp was welcomed by Brig. Gen. Zosimo Oliveros, the commanding officer of the 802nd IB.
Oliveros said the existence of the camp showed that communist guerrillas violated international humanitarian laws by making bombs that could indiscriminately kill.
Saag is now in the custody of the 14th Infantry Battalion and was expected to receive money under the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-Clip), a counterinsurgency measure that offers financing, housing, education and other benefits to lure rebels to surrender.
