Signal No. 2 in 8 Luzon, Visayas areas as Typhoon Bising maintains strength

MANILA, Philippines — Eight areas are under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 as Typhoon Bising moved north-northwestward while maintaining its strength, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Monday.

The center of the eye of the typhoon was last located 250 kilometers east northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, Pagasa reported in its 5 a.m. severe weather bulletin.

Pagasa said “Bising”  was moving north-nothwestward at 10 kilometers per hour (kph) and has maximum sustained winds of 195 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kph.

A wind speed of greater than 61 kph and up to 120 kph may be expected in at least 24 hours in the following areas placed under TCWS No. 2:

Luzon

Catanduanes

eastern portion of Camarines Sur (Garchitorena, Presentacion, Caramoan, Sagnay, San Jose, Lagonoy)

Luzon

eastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Palanan, Dinapigue), the northern portion of Aurora (Casiguran, Dilasag)

Rainfall forecast

According to Pagasa, moderate to heavy with at times intense rains will be experienced in the Bicol region, Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, and Leyte on Monday.

On Tuesday, moderate to heavy rains are expected in the Bicol region and Northern Samar.

“Under these conditions and considering the antecedent rainfall over the aforementioned areas, flooding (including flash floods) and rain-induced landslides are increasingly likely to occur especially in areas identified in hazard maps as highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards,” the weather bureau warned.

Wind factors

Pagasa noted that tropical cyclone winds classified as strong breeze to near gale in strength extend outward up to 440 km from the center of the typhoon, while destructive typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 110 km from the center of the typhoon.

In the next 24 hours, the northeasterly wind flow enhanced by the typhoon will also bring strong breeze to near gale conditions with higher gusts over most of Northern Luzon, Aurora, and the rest of Quezon that are not under any typhoon warning signals.

Pagasa said such conditions are more likely to occur in the coastal and mountainous areas.

On the forecast track, the state weather bureau said “Bising” will move generally northward or north northwestward until Wednesday evening or Thursday early morning.

It will then move northeastward throughout Thursday and east northeastward on Friday away from the landmass of Luzon.

“The typhoon is forecast to maintain its current intensity in the next 12 to 24 hours before gradually weakening throughout the remainder of the forecast period,” Pagasa added.
