Active COVID-19 cases rise past 138,000 with 8,920 new infections

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s total active COVID-19 cases is now at 138,948 after the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 8,920 new infections as of Thursday, April 1.

DOH’s COVID-19 bulletin showed that 205 patients recovered, bringing the total recoveries to 603,948.  Six new deaths meanwhile pushed the death toll to 13,303.

All in all, the country has 756,199 confirmed COVID-19 patients since the pandemic reached the country.

Most of the patients or 95.9 percent of active cases have still exhibited mild symptoms only, while 2.5 percent were asymptomatic.  At least 0.6 percent of the patients currently have severe symptoms while another 0.6 percent are in critical condition.

Of the 34,270 tests conducted on Wednesday, DOH said that 21.1 percent tested positive.  In terms of COVID-19 bed capacity in the National Capital Region which is grappling with a surge in cases, 76 percent of intensive care unit beds have been utilized while 70 percent of isolation beds are occupied.

Despite the high number of cases, seven laboratories were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS) on Wednesday.

Also, nine duplicate entries were removed from the total case count, three of which were listed as recoveries.
