NCR hospitals scene: 76% of ICU beds for COVID-19 patients occupied
MANILA, Philippines — Around 76.18 percent or 595 of 781 total Intensive Care Unite (ICU) beds solely for COVID-19 patients in Metro Manila hospitals are already in use as of March 28, according to Department of Health (DOH) data.
The data likewise indicated that as of the same date, 69.57 percent or 3,216 of 4,623 isolation beds and 58.80 percent or 2,022 of 3,439 ward beds in the capital region are likewise occupied.
Overall, it noted that bed occupancy rate for the whole National Capital Region (NCR) reached 66 percent, with 5,144 of the total 8,843 beds in use.
47 hospitals under ‘critical’ level
Based on the same DOH data, 47 of 154 hospitals in NCR were placed under critical status in terms of bed capacity allotted for COVID-19 patients while 23 were listed under the high-risk status.
The figure for hospitals classified as critical and high-risk increased from the previous 43 and 19, respectively, as of March 23.

DOH classifies occupancy levels for COVID-19 beds in health centers as either critical, high risk, moderate, and safe.

Hospitals are classified as high risk if 70 percent but not more than 85 percent of its COVID-19 beds are occupied while those with a COVID-19 bed capacity of 60 to 70 percent rate are classified as moderate.
Hospitals fall under the safe level if their bed utilization rate is less than 60 percent.

This article aims to show how prepared Metro Manila hospitals are, should there be a rush in COVID-19 infections in the region, which remains the epicenter of the health crisis in the Philippines.
However, only hospitals in Metro Manila that have information on COVID-19 bed allocation for the treatment of new coronavirus patients were included in this article.

The DOH on Tuesday reported 9,296 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total active coronavirus cases in the country to 124,680.
Of the tally, 603,310 patients survived while 13,191 succumbed to the respiratory illness caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.
The Philippines’ total COVID-19 caseload is 741,181.
On Monday, the health department reported its all-time high single-day tally of 10,016 new infections in the country.
