MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) through personnel of the Manila International Container Port (MICP) has confiscated P3.2 million worth of secondhand clothing or “ukay-ukay” in Malibay, Pasay City.

According to BOC, personnel of the MICP’s Enforcement and Security Service in coordination with the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service and Philippine Coast Guard seized on Wednesday 400 bales of secondhand clothing during an inspection at the concerned facility.

“Further investigation and inventory are being conducted for possible filing of cases against the yet-to-be-determined owner of the items for the possible violation of Section 1400 of RA (Republic Act) 10863 also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act,” the bureau said.

Section 1400 of the law deals with misdeclaration, misclassification, and undervaluation in the declaration of goods.

Republic Act No. 4653 prohibits the “commercial importation of textile articles commonly known as used clothing and rags.”
