Abra Rep. Joseph Bernos contracts COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — Abra Rep. Joseph Bernos has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus that causes respiratory disease COVID-19.

Bernos said he received his COVID-19 test results on Wednesday as part of his routine checkup.

“Currently, I am asymptomatic and undergoing home quarantine, as advised by my doctors. It is unfortunate that despite following strict protocols, I have contracted the virus due to numerous unavoidable commitments,” Bernos said in a statement.

Bernos advised those who may have had close contact with him to immediately take precautionary measures, observe possible symptoms, and undergo testing.

“I ask for your prayers not only for me but for our entire country facing this pandemic, that the virus may be eradicated soon so that we can return to be in the service of our fellow Filipinos,” he said.

Most-recent COVID-19 infections among lawmakers include Majority Leader Martin Romualdez and Negros Oriental Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong.

The House suspended its work operations until Wednesday, March 24, due to an “alarming” increase of COVID-19 cases, especially in Metro Manila.

Plenary sessions will resume on Thursday, March 25, at 9 a.m. but scheduled online hearings will continue, said House Secretary-General Mark Llandro Mendoza.
