DepEd-Zambales exec takes the blame for COVID-19 outbreak in 2 seminars

SAN ANTONIO, Zambales –– Following a surge in the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases among employees of the Department of Education in this province, the schools’ division superintendent said he has taken “full responsibility [for] the situation.”

“I plea the public to give us time to do immediate actions to ensure that all employees will be safe and provide support to all who are affected,” Leonardo Zapanta said in a statement Monday.

At least 49 DepEd employees had contracted COVID-19 during two separate seminars organized for school heads in Zambales this month.

Seven workers of a resort that hosted one of the seminars had also tested positive for the virus.

The source of the infection is a teacher, who served as the guest speaker in both DepEd events attended by about 300 people, according to Dr. Noel Bueno, provincial health director.

Those exposed and came in contact with the infected DepEd employees are still waiting for their swab test results.

“We are willing to address all queries and concerns in due time, but now, please allow us to heal,” Zapanta said.

Zapanta earlier said the face-to-face seminars were organized by the association of school principals in this province.

“Nagrequest ang association ng mga principals both elementary and secondary, and I approved it provided that maximum health protocols will be observed,” Zapanta said in a text message.

“Participants submitted health clearance, and the training was not mandatory. Ang association din ang naghanap ng venue at speakers,” he added.
