Teenage girl dead, pal hurt in ‘after-party’ bike mishap

An 18-year-old woman died while her female companion was injured in a motorbike accident early Monday morning in Caloocan City. Police Officer 2 Ferdinand Manapat said the tandem might have been drunk when they hit the road after “coming from a party.” Jeansy Ramos, the driver, lost control while speeding along Baesa Road at around 1 a.m. and was killed on the spot after smashing into a wall. Her companion, Reizzie Mey Llano, 17, suffered head injuries and broke her left arm. The victims’ relatives, however, were blaming the accident on the driver of a taxi that was seen going in the opposite direction and allegedly caused Ramos to lose control.—Kristine Felisse Mangunay

Mass for World War II victims

A requiem Mass will be offered at the Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica at 10 a.m. on February 13 for World War II victims in the Philippines and the soldiers who fought in the battle for the liberation of Manila from February 3 to March 3, 1945. The main Mass celebrant will be His Excellency Bishop Leopold S. Tumulak, DD, Military Bishop, Military Ordinariate of the Philippines. The Mass is sponsored by The Prayer Warriors of the Holy Souls, a Catholic lay apostolate of Monfort Foundation Inc., committed to propagating the devotion to the holy souls in purgatory. More than 100,000 civilians—noncombatant men, women, children and infants—were killed during the monthlong battle when Manila was completely destroyed by American heavy artillery and the “Scorched Earth” policy of the Japanese Imperial Army to raze the city to the ground.
