15 fishers of boat that capsized during Auring’s onslaught rescued

MANILA, Philippines — Fifteen local fishermen whose boat capsized off the coast of Surigao during the onslaught of Tropical Storm Auring last week have been rescued, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Friday.

“According to the boat captain, they encountered big waves that damaged the boat’s outrigger, until it eventually capsized,” the PCG said in an incident report.

“They were rescued by a transiting fishing boat that also conducted radio communication with the PCG for support,” it added.

The PCG extended assistance to the 15 fishermen, who were provided with food, water, and initial medical check-up.

The fishermen have been turned over to the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office of General Santos City for further assistance.
