Cargo truck goes wayward in Albay highway; 2 dead, 2 hurt

LEGAZPI CITY –– Two truck helpers died and two others were wounded when a cargo truck rammed a center island and sideswiped another truck along the Maharlika Highway on Monday morning in Camalig town in Albay province, a police report said.

Lieutenant Armando Revale, Camalig town police spokesperson, has identified the truck helpers, who died in the accident as Ian Robelas and Jobet Grantos, both from Bulan town in Sorsogon province.

The initial report said the cargo truck driven by Dino Gutlay, 26, a resident of Bulan, Sorsogon, was traversing the highway from Sorsogon around 6:30 a.m. on its way to deliver 150 styrofoam boxes of fish to a sardine factory in Navotas City when he lost control of the vehicle.

The cargo truck then hit the center island in Barangay Ilawod and sideswiped the mini truck driven by Jay Madrilejos, which was traveling from Naga City to deliver motorcycle spare parts to a store in this city.

Revale said the two truck helpers were pinned under the cargo truck as it turned turtle and died on the spot.

Wounded in the accident were Gutlay, 26, and Dave Nelis, 40, a resident of Camalig, who was hit by the cargo truck as he was biking along the highway.

They were taken to the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital here for treatment.

An investigation is still going on.
