MANILA, Philippines — Vehicles would still need either an emission or private motor vehicle inspection clearance prior to registration, Malacañang said Friday.
“Meron tayong clarification. Bagamat ang Pangulo po ay nagsabi na hindi dapat ipatupad ang Motor Vehicle Inspection, kinakailangan pa rin po na magsubmit ng either yung emission clearance or MVIS [motor vehicle inspection system],” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a televised briefing.
(We have a clarification. Although the President said that the implementation of Motor Vehicle Inspection is no longer mandatory, they still need to submit either the emission clearance or MVIS clearance.)
“Dalawa po yang pupuwede ninyong isumite, yung emission na dati na po yan or MVIS. Hindi pupuwede na wala ang pareho,” he added.
(You may submit either of two documents, the emission clearance already in place before or the MVIS. The absence of both will not do.)
Operators of the Private Motor Vehicle Inspection Centers (PMVICs) agreed to lower their rates for the 70-part test to just P600 from the previous inspection fee of P1,800.
Senators earlier recommended the suspension of operations of PMVICs as some have grown “suspicious” that it might be “prone to corruption.”
PMVICs are authorized to collect an inspection fee of P1,800 from motor vehicles weighing 4,500 kilograms or less and another P900 in case it fails the first inspection.
Motorcycles and tricycles, on the other hand, are charged a P600-inspection fee and P300-reinspection fee, if necessary.
Should a vehicle fail the test, it must undergo the necessary repairs then return to private inspection centers to be cleared for registration with the Land Transportation Office.
