Uncle of Lanao Sur mayor slain in ambush

COTABATO CITY—Unidentified gunmen ambushed and killed on Wednesday (Feb. 10) a relative of a town mayor in Lanao del Sur province.

Mayor Tomas Macapodi, of Malabang, Lanao del Sur, said his uncle, Rauf Malawani, a community organizer, was driving his vehicle for home from Marawi City when ambushed at the village of Bacayawan, Malabang town past 3 p.m.

Malawani died on the spot, according to Macapodi.

The attackers, who were armed with assault rifles, escaped before the police arrived, he added.

Macapodi appealed to his relatives to stand down and refrain from putting the law into their hands and allow police to do their job.
