MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) on Wednesday said the dialogue with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on the 1992 agreement would help restore “mutual trust” with the interior department.
“UP looks forward to the meeting with DILG officials. As we’ve stated in the past, a dialogue is important to settle issues and restore the mutual trust between our respective institutions,” Dr. Elena Pernia, vice president for public affairs in UP Diliman, said in a text message to INQUIRER.net when sought for a reaction regarding DILG’s move to review its deal with UP, which
Pernia added that the DILG already informed the university regarding the meeting, but there is no exact date for the dialogue.
Just like the terminated 1989 accord of UP with the Department of National Defense, the 1992 UP-DILG agreement prohibits lawmen from entering premises of UP campuses “without coordination with UP administration except in hot pursuit cases and similar occasions of emergency, or in ordinary transit through UP premises.”
In January, the DND terminated its 1989 accord with UP, citing that the agreement is being an issue to the security and welfare of faculty, students, and UP employees.
Defense Chief Delfin Lorenzana claimed that communist groups are recruiting students.
The Philippine military recently released a list of UP alumni who joined the New People’s Army and were killed or captured. The list was dismissed as erroneous and was eventually deleted.
