MANILA, Philippines — Police and local government units were directed to go after individuals stealing power cables and using illegal jumpers to ensure “continued electric service” for consumers, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said Saturday.

“We received reports on the theft of power cables and rampant use of illegal jumpers, especially in informal settler communities. We have therefore directed the PNP and LGUs to work with EDUs [electric distribution utilities] in pinning down power thieves who illegally use electricity or commit theft of electric power transmission lines and materials,” DILG Officer-in-Charge Bernardo Florece Jr. said in a statement.

In addition, Florece ordered the Bureau of Fire Protection to give lawmen relevant information regarding fire incidents triggered by “compromised” power lines or facilities.

Florece said this would help prevent obstructions of power lines of the EDUs.

The DILG top officer also urged LGUs to fast track the process for all important documents required for operations of EDUs. He said local governments must follow the timeline set under the Ease of Doing Business Act.

“Electricity is essential in our day-to-day activities. LGUs should therefore fast track the issuance, approval, and release of permits and other requirements necessary for EDUs operations,” he said.
