Girl, 5, dies after accidentally shooting self in Abra, say cops

BAGUIO CITY –– A 5-year-old girl died on the spot after accidentally firing off a “sumpak” (improvised shotgun) around 4 p.m. on Thursday in Pidigan, Abra, police said.

Investigators said the victim, a resident of Sitio Cautit in Barangay Monggoc, accidentally squeezed the trigger of the loaded firearm as she swung it on her back. The bullet instantly killed the child.

The girl, along with two other children, were supposed to fetch water but ended up playing with the firearm whose owner has not been identified.

But the girl’s family refused to believe there was no foul play in the death of the child and requested a deeper investigation. INQ
