BACOLOD CITY—The city council of Talisay in Negros Occidental on Wednesday (Jan. 6) approved its mayor’s recommendation to declare a state of calamity for at least 15 days to help the city government manage a rehabilitation campaign for areas devastated by flooding.

Mayor Neil Lizares said at least 21 houses were destroyed while 244 were damaged by the floods that displaced or swamped the homes of at least 4,661 families.

Authorities estimated the damage caused by the floods last December to reach P17 million with 3,070 farmers facing income losses.
