MANILA, Philippines — How about the 99 percent of cops in the Philippine National Police (PNP) who are good cops?

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año on Wednesday bewailed the generalization of critics of the entire police force following the brutal killing of an elderly women and her adult son by a policeman in Paniqui, Tarlac last December 20.

Año insisted that the case of Police Master Sergeant Nuezca is an isolated one.

“Kaya natin sinabi na isolated case, kasi gine-generalize nila [public]. Papaano naman iyong matitino na police natin na 99 percent na matino at sila iyong nagpapatupad ng quarantine protocols. Sila iyong nakikipaglaban sa criminal,” said Año in an interview with dzbb, explaining his previous remark that Nuezca’s case is an isolated incident.

(We called this an isolated case because they are generalizing it. How about the police officers who are 99 percent good and who are implementing quarantine protocols. They are the ones defending us from criminals.)

“Sila iyong talagang kapag sa Facebook tinitignan mo, maraming magagandang deeds kahit hindi na on official duty ang kapulisan,” Año added.

(In Facebook posts, police show their good deeds even if it is not part of their official duty.)

Nuezca, assigned at Parañaque police, shot to death his neighbors Sonya Gregorio and Frank outside the victims’ house at Paniqui, Tarlac after a heated argument regarding firing of boga or bamboo-made noisemakers.

The killings led social media users to launch online protests against police abuse.

A case for two counts of murder was already lodged against Nuezca at the Regional Trial Court, Branch 67 of Paniqui, Tarlac.

Nuezca was also demoted in the police service due to a grave misconduct case in 2014.
