NORZAGARAY, Bulacan—A drug suspect died in his attempt to escape while he was being brought to jail on Thursday (Dec. 17).

Investigators said Dengdeng Tumalad jumped out of a moving police car and landed in a creek. He was taken to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Police said Tumalad had earlier been wounded in a gunfight with policemen after he was accosted for a gun tucked in his waist. He had been under surveillance for drugs.

Tumalad escaped after the gunfight but was later arrested. A policeman had been wounded in the clash.
