DAVAO CITY, Philippines—A suspected communist rebel was killed while 11 other civilians were wounded in a grenade explosion in Kibawe town in Bukidnon on Monday morning.

Colonel Leopoldo Galon, spokesman of the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command, said the still unidentified fatality was a rebel who was conducting a teach-in among residents of Barangay (village) Sampaguita when the grenade accidentally exploded around 11:30 a.m.

The wounded civilians were taken to the Bukidnon Provincial Hospital in Maramag town.

Galon said the police and military’s 8th Infantry Battalion have been investigating the explosion.
