CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—At least 300,818 young students in Central Luzon schools started getting breads for 60 days while 473,331 others got milk for 50 days to improve their health during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday (Dec. 9).

The recipients of the school-based feeding program are enrolled in public kindergarten and elementary schools. Found to be in poor health, they have been categorized as “wasted” or “severely wasted.”

For the supply of fresh milk, the agency has partnered with the Philippine Carabao Center and National Dairy Authority.

“Despite the pandemic, the DepEd health and nutrition program continuously advocates healthy habits to our learners even in the confines of their homes,” Dr. Gladys Lourdes Bengco, DepEd regional medical officer, said in a statement.

Hygiene kits with toothbrush, toothpaste and soap will also be distributed to more than 1 million elementary students.
