LUCENA CITY – A laborer died while three others were injured in a freak accident inside a parked shipping container van containing glass panels here on Friday.

Lucena police reported that Erwin Arnejo drove his trailer truck tractor head backward to connect to a parked shipping container van along the diversion road in Barangay Ibabang Dupay around 2:30 p.m.

Police said Arnejo was unaware that four construction workers – Jhon Paul Ongcal, 24; Richard Gutierrez, 37; Rodel Ceballos, 42; and Martino Villa, 43 – were inside the container van loaded with glass panels.

As the truck connected to the van, its movement caused the glass panels to collapse and pin down the laborers.

The workers sustained serious injuries and were taken to nearby Saint Anne General Hospital but Ongcal died two hours later while undergoing treatment.

Arnejo was detained at the city police jail and is facing criminal charges.
