MANILA, Philippines—The government’s major earthquake drill on Friday drew thousands of participants online.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) streamed the drill live on Facebook, generating an online audience of 163,900, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

The drill, forced to go online by the COVID-19 pandemic, encouraged people to duck, cover and hold in their homes and offices. Government and OCD employees joined the drill through the video app Zoom.

“We’re highlighting that even in the middle of the pandemic, preparedness for disaster is one thing that should not be set aside,” said Casiano Monilla, OCD assistant secretary, speaking in Filipino.

“May everyone give importance to activities, programs and other events that are for our safety because danger is always there,” Monilla said.
