MANILA, Philippines — Labor inspectors of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) must look into possible lapses in the construction of the ongoing Skyway project after a steel girder fell on vehicles and killed one person in Muntinlupa City, Senator Joel Villanueva said Saturday.

Villanueva, chairman of the Senate committee on labor, also emphasized that construction managers of the Skyway should cooperate with the DOLE during the investigation.

“Isa po sa peligrosong lugar-paggawa ang mga construction site, kaya po mahigpit ang pagpapatupad ng mga safety measures upang siguraduhin na walang aksidente na mangyayari at bawasan ang mga risk factors dahil ito ay maaaring maging mapaminsala,” Villanueva, principal author and sponsor of Occupational Safety and Health Standards  (OSHS) Law, said in a statement.

“Ang mga manggagawa po natin ang unang napapahamak tuwing may aksidente sa lugar-paggawa kaya mahigpit po ang pagpapatupad natin ng occupational safety and health standards,” he went on.

(Our workers are the first to experience risk and accidents in construction sites so it is important to implement occupational safety and health standards.)

“Ang agarang imbestigasyon ng ating labor inspectors ay kinakailangan po upang matukoy ang sanhi at makapagbigay ng solusyon sa problema para siguraduhin hindi na mauulit ito,” the senator further said.

(Immediate investigation of labor inspectors is needed to detect the possible lapses or causes of the accident as well as give solutions so that this incident will not happen again.)

Under the OSHS Law or Republic Act No. 11058, the DOLE is mandated to inspect workplaces to check on the existing occupational safety and health practices. Companies that would violate the OSHS Law would face a fine of P100,000.

The steel girder from the Skyway project fell on several vehicles on the East Service Road in Barangay Cupang, Muntinlupa City at 8:50 a.m.
