MANILA, Philippines — Ten out of 129 hospitals in Metro Manila were tagged under the “critical” level in terms of bed capacity solely for COVID-19 patients, data from the Department of Health (DOH) as of Nov. 18 showed.
The latest figures from the DOH showed that two more hospitals were added under the “critical level” from eight hospitals last Nov. 12. However, the previous data comprised of only 128 hospitals.
Of the hospitals under the “critical” level, five have already reached 100 percent bed occupancy, namely the Allied Care Experts (Ace) Medical Center Valenzuela, Bernardino General Hospital I, Marikina Doctors Hospital and Medical Center, Mary Chiles General Hospital Inc. and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center.
The DOH classifies occupancy levels for COVID-19 beds in health centers as either “critical,” “high risk,” “moderate” and “safe.”
Under the “critical” level, hospitals have already reached more than 85 percent of their bed occupancy for COVID-19 patients.
Hospitals are identified as “high risk” if 70 percent but not more than 85 percent of its COVID-19 beds are occupied.
Should hospitals have a 60 percent but not more than 70 percent rate for COVID-19 bed occupancy, they are classified under the “moderate” level.
And hospitals fall under the “safe” level if their bed utilization rate is less than 60 percent.
The bed occupancy rate for the whole of Metro Manila remains at the “safe” zone with 40.1 percent, or 2,757 out of the 6,883 total beds being occupied.
INQUIRER.net analyzed the most available data, which is on Nov. 18, 2020, based on the DOH’s COVID-19 tracker.
Data lifted from ncovtracker.doh.gov.ph shows the COVID-19 bed capacity of Metro Manila hospitals, as of Nov. 18, 2020.
The article aims to show how prepared Metro Manila hospitals are if there is a sudden surge in COVID-19 infections. However, only hospitals in Metro Manila that have data on COVID-19 beds allocated for the treatment of coronavirus patients were included in this article.
