8 of 128 hospitals in NCR in critical level–DOH

MANILA, Philippines —  Less than 10 hospitals in Metro Manila will be overwhelmed if there is a sudden increase of coronavirus disease infections in their respective areas, latest data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed.

The health agency said the number of “critical level” hospitals decreased from 10 out of 129 hospitals recorded on Nov. 4 to eight out of 128 hospitals on Nov. 12.

Of the eight hospitals, the COVID-19 beds of five “critical” hospitals, namely Allied Care Experts (Ace) Medical Center Valenzuela; Alabang Medical Clinic; Mary Chiles General Hospital Inc.; Medical Center Taguig; and Philippine Children’s Medical Center, are already full.

The DOH reclassified its classification for occupancy level of COVID-19 beds in health centers to critical, high risk, moderate, and safe.

“Critical” means that hospitals have already reached more than 85 percent of its bed occupancy rate for COVID-19 patients.

Meanwhile, hospitals are “high-risk” if 70 percent but not more than 85 percent of their COVID-19 facilities are occupied.

Hospitals are classified as “moderate” level if they have a 60 percent but not more than 70 percent bed occupancy percentage.

Hospitals are safe from COVID-19 surge if they have bed utilization rate of less than 60 percent.

For the whole of Metro Manila, occupancy rate of COVID-19 beds maintained at the “safe” zone with 39.6 percent, which means 2,649 out of the 6,697 total beds are occupied.

INQUIRER.net analyzed the most available data, which is on Nov. 12, 2020, based on the DOH’s COVID-19 tracker.

The article seeks to show the readiness of Metro Manila hospitals in case of sudden increase in coronavirus disease infections.

However, only hospitals in Metro Manila with COVID-19 beds or facilities were included in this article.

According to DOH tracker, there are 161 hospitals in Metro Manila but only 128 have COVID-19 facilities.
