MANILA, Philippines — Marikina City has recorded one fatality in the aftermath of Typhoon Ulysses, Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro said Friday.
The fatality, Teodoro said, was a resident of Barangay Malanday who was killed as he was fleeing rising floodwaters that submerged their home.
“I am very sad to announce that we have 1 fatality. Naaksidente siya sa Brgy Malanday. Habang lumilikas siya nadulas siya pag baba doon sa hagdan nila at bumagsak siya sa tubig baha,” Teodoro said in an interview over CNN Philippines’ The Source.
“Nalunod siya instantly,” he added.
The local government is already assisting the family of the departed, Teodoro said.
Marikina has been placed under a state of calamity on Friday following massive floods caused by Typhoon Ulysses.
A large part of Marikina was submerged in floodwater on Thursday after the Marikina River overflowed due to strong rains brought by Ulysses.
