Tonyo now over coastal waters of Occidental Mindoro; new LPA spotted
MANILA, Philippines — Tropical depression Tonyo has slightly accelerated and is now over the coastal waters of Paluan, Occidental Mindoro, as a new low pressure (LPA) that could develop into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours was spotted east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
Based on the severe weather bulletin issued by Pagasa at 2 p.m. Sunday, the center of tropical depression Tonyo was last spotted 105 kilometers west of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. It is moving westward at 30 kilometers per hour and has maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 60 kph.
Meanwhile, the LPA 920 km east of Hinatuan will be named “Ulysses” once it becomes a tropical depression.
On the forecast track, Pagasa said Tonyo will move westward towards the western boundary of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). It may exit the PAR Monday morning.
The weather disturbance is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm within the next 24 hours.
According to Pagasa, Tonyo will bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Mindoro Provinces, and Palawan including Calamian and Kalayaan Islands.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is already lifted in most areas except for the northwestern portion of Occidental Mindoro (Abra de Ilog, Paluan, Mamburao, Santa Cruz) including Lubang Island.
Pagasa warned that the said areas may experience strong breeze to near gale conditions with occasional gusts. The northeast monsoon will also bring strong breeze to near gale conditions over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, and the northern portion of mainland Cagayan.
