705 families in Calapan City flee as Rolly barrels through Luzon

CITY OF CALAPAN – With Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 4 hoisted by the state weather bureau over Mindoro island, at least 705 families or 3,000 individuals from 30 coastal villages and danger zones were evacuated to different schools in the city on Sunday, the City Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office said.

Calapan Mayor Arnan Panaligan had ordered preemptive evacuation in danger zones as Typhoon Rolly (international name: Goni) continues with its track through Luzon after bringing intense rains and strong winds over the Bicol region.

To observe physical distancing as a health protocol against the coronavirus disease, only one family is assigned to occupy a classroom.

In Occidental Mindoro, at least 12 families or 54 individuals have been evacuated to the provincial capitol evacuation center in Mamburao town, Governor Eduardo Gadiano said.

At the Sto. Niño Cathedral in Calapan, Masses were canceled because of the inclement weather.

Meanwhile, power restoration activities to repair the power lines damaged by typhoon Quinta (international name: Molave) were also suspended by the Oriental Mindoro electric power company until the weather improves.
