Typhoon Quinta displaces over 95,000 Bicol folk
LEGAZPI CITY — Typhoon Quinta (international name: Molave) forced the evacuation of at least 25,287 families or 95,859 individuals in many parts of the Bicol region on Sunday night.
The typhoon has made its first landfall in San Miguel Island in Tabaco City at 6:10 p.m., and hit Malinao town at 6:50 p.m., both in Albay.
The Office of Civil Defense – Bicol reported that as of 11:30 p.m., Sunday, 2,707 families or 10,231 individuals were evacuated in three towns in Albay; seven families or 36 persons in Camarines Norte; 835 families (3,309 persons) in Catanduanes; 1,199 families (2,929 persons) in Masbate, 3,088 families (7,446 persons) in Sorsogon and 183 families (743 persons) in Naga City.
In Camarines Sur, Estel Estropia, spokesperson of provincial disaster risk reduction and management office, said that as of 5:30 a.m., Monday, 17,268 families or 71,165 individuals took shelter in evacuation sites and private residences.
Hours before landfall, power was cut in Albay province.
In Legazpi City, floodwaters submerged numerous houses, Mayor Noel Rosal said.
Meanwhile, 569 passengers, 266 trucks, eight light vehicles, 42 vessels and two motorized bancas were stranded in various ports in Bicol.
