AT least six Internet cafes in Lapu-Lapu City were closed down for three months for violating a city ordinance that regulates the admission of students during schooldays.
Rolando Duero, secretary to the mayor, said the Internet cafes had their business licenses suspended for three months after allowing students inside their premises during class hours.
The ordinance bars students from being inside Internet cafés from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, including Saturdays if there are special classes on that day. Duero said the orders were served since last Dec. 9 to Jan. 10 this year.
He said they coordinated with the Parents Teachers Association of the city’s schools to monitor the activities of schoolchildren.
Among the Internet cafes closed were those owned by Randy Gastador at Ibo of Lapu-Lapu City and Hope Lopez at barangay Basak, Roufel Mahusay, Ambrosio Dela Cruz, Ben and Florabel Vargas at Mahusay Compound, barangay Punta Engaño. Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza said the parents of the students caught inside Internet cafes during class hours were called to sign an agreement in which they will be held liable if their children will be caught anew.
