43,000 chickens die of heatstroke in Laguna poultry farm

MANILA, Philippines — An estimated 43,000 chickens died of heatstroke in a Nagcarlan, Laguna poultry farm following a power outage.

Thousands of dead chickens can be seen in the photos and videos provided by Cezon Vieron and Jasmin Vieron Alibio from the poultry farm in Barangay Maravilla.

In a phone call interview with INQUIRER.net on Thursday, Alibio said chickens died because of a power outage that struck the air-conditioned poultry farm on Tuesday.

“Mga three to four hours po [nawalan ng kuryente],” Alibio said. “Nag-start po siya mga 11 a.m.-12 p.m. po.”

(The power was out for three to four hours. It started around 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.)

“Eh yung poultry farm po ay air-conditioned po siya. Di raw po kinaya ng generator nila,” Alibio added.

(The poultry farm is air-conditioned. The generator couldn’t provide enough power for the air conditioning.)

Alibio, who is also a vlogger, added that she got word of the dead chickens after seeing a man with one of the dead chickens.

“Bumili po kasi ako ng ulam. Then merong lalaki na may dala ng manok,” she recalled. “Sabi niya ‘Pinamimigay yung manok doon kasi brownout, di kinaya.’  Kasi air-conditioned nga daw po yung [poultry farm].”

(I was out to buy food. Then one man had a chicken with him. He said “They are giving away the chickens there because it was hit by a brownout. It couldn’t handle the heat. Because the poultry farm was air-conditioned.)
