MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte lauded the “momentous” opening of classes, saying not even the COVID-19 pandemic can get in the way of students’ education.
“The school opening of this year is a momentous occasion because it is pushing through despite a global health crisis due to COVID-19,” Duterte said in a pre-recorded message aired Monday.
“Indeed, nothing can get in the way of the instruction and formation of our learners, not even a pandemic,” he added.
Classes in public schools were supposed to open back in August but were moved to October 5 to prepare the government in facilitating distance learning.
In light of the pandemic, the Department of Education (DepEd) will implement blended learning where modules, radio, television, and internet are utilized as media of instruction.
“This time also ushers in a new era in our basic education program as we now venture into distance and online learning. A challenging frontier not only for students and teachers, but for teachers, guardians, parents and guardians as well,” Duterte said.
“May this school year be marked with strong hopes and optimism that effective learning will take place rather, even amidst the odds and challenges. Together, let us work to achieve a more informed and enlightened, inspired citizenry, starting with our children,” he went on.
Some 24.7 million students enrolled in public and private schools for this school year, DepEd said.
