Police form special team to investigate death of journalist in Sorsogon
MANILA, Philippines — The Police Regional Office 5 (Bicol region) through the Sorsogon Police Provincial Office has created a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the killing of an online journalist in Sorsogon City.
The investigating team on the death of Jobert Bercasio will be headed by Lt. Col. Joceric Dela Peña, Deputy Provincial Director for Operations of PRO5, as SIT commander, according to a statement from the Bicol region police on Tuesday.
Bercasio was driving his motorcycle in Barangay Cabid-an when two motorcycle-riding gunmen shot him four times at 7:55 p.m. Monday.
He was handling a morning news and commentary program on Balangibog Internet TV aired through Facebook, and was also a former reporter of a radio station in Legazpi City.
The Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit was also directed to examine his social media accounts as part of the investigation.
“PNP Bicol condemns in the strongest manner the brutal killing of the said media member. Thus, it will mobilize all means possible within the limits of the law to investigate and identify the culprit of the incidents and to give justice to the bereaved family,” PRO5 said.
