Rear Admiral Edmund Tan takes over as Coast Guard commandant

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino has appointed the Philippine Coast Guard’s chief for operations, Rear Admiral Edmund Tan, as the group’s new commandant.

Aquino witnessed on Tuesday afternoon the turnover of command from the retiring PCG commandant, Admiral Ramon Liwag, to Tan.

Aquino presented Liwag with the Presidential Legion of Honor with the rank of Lakan during the ceremonies at the Coast Guard headquarters in Manila.

Tan was chief of the coast guard staff for intelligence and operations and vice commandant for administration.

Before being appointed commandant, he was the vice commandant for operations.

Tan is a member of the Philippine Military Academy’s Mapitagan Class of 1980.
