A family of four perished in what police say is a triple homicide-suicide committed by a 61-year-old father in the city of Bloomington in Indiana, USA.
The father, Jeff Mumper, is believed to have shot his 54-year-old wife, Greta, his 26-year-old daughter Emma and his 18-year-old son Jakob before shooting himself, as per NBC affiliate WTHR on Sept. 6.
Jakob was an elite swimmer at the Bloomington North High School, while his older sister Emma was a graduate school student at the Stony Brook University in New York.
Friends of the family said that the father was battling pancreatic cancer and had previously beaten prostate cancer, according to the report.
Police have yet to determine the motive for the killings, but coroner Joani Shields has already ruled the deaths of the wife and children as homicide and Jeff’s death as a suicide, as per WFIU on Sept. 10.
Authorities learned of the incident when Emma’s friend came over to their house on the morning of Sept. 6. She was picking Emma up, but no one was answering the door. She then entered the house using a key and found her friend, already dead, inside her room.
She then exited the house and called 911. Police responded and found that all four family members had been shot. The bodies of Greta and Jakob were found in their rooms, while Jeff’s was found inside the bathroom.
