A 22-year-old man has been charged with capital murder after fatally shooting a pedestrian several times because the latter apparently walked too slow as he crossed the road.

Jeremiah Wesley Penn initially fled the scene after killing 29-year-old Johnarian Travez Allen on the night of Aug. 27 in Alabama, USA, as per NBC affiliate WSFA on Aug. 28.

Shortly after, Penn turned himself in to the authorities and confessed to his friend, Sgt. Chad Faulkner, who is a sheriff’s deputy. Penn has since been booked to the Bullock County Jail.

There is no known history between the two men, which left investigators baffled at the motive of the killer as found in the homicide investigation, according to the report.

Union Springs Police Department chief Danny Jackson told the television station in an interview that Penn and Allen had a verbal altercation after the former told the latter to get out of the street.

Penn then shot Allen several times before driving away. Police found 13 shell cases at the scene, while Allen was hit eight times.

Allen was said to have been crossing the street after buying some snacks from a local Union Springs store when he crossed paths with Penn. Ian Biong /ra
