11,000 public school students in San Juan get tablets

MANILA, Philippines — Around 11,000 public elementary and high school students in San Juan will each receive tablets after the city was chosen as one of two pilot areas for the P64-million Digital Education: Digital Teachers and Digital Learners project of the Department of Information and Communication Technology.

Some 1,500 elementary students at Pinaglabanan Elementary School, where the program would be implemented, would get laptops and pocket Wi-Fi in September in time for the opening of classes on Oct. 5, according to Mayor Francis Zamora.

“Digital education is different from distant learning. Under distant learning, the instruction will be blended: modular, television and online. Under digital education, we will have online; it’s laptop-based,” Zamora said.

In Makati, the other pilot site, around 12,000 college students will also receive tablets.
