Taguig holds online digital convention for youth leaders

MANILA, Philippines — The Taguig government organized this year’s Youthcon from Aug. 24 to Aug. 29 online to promote social distancing amid the coronavirus disease pandemic.

“Over the pandemic, we’ve pushed ourselves to explore possibilities in the new normal scenario. This annual convention going to the virtual world is us pushing the envelope once more, for the welfare of a sector that has always been dear to Taguig,” City Mayor Lino Cayetano said in a statement on Sunday.

Youthcon in 2019 was attended by some 1,500 Taguig residents aged 15 to 30 years old.

This year, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation chair Beng Maximo said the digital convention, with the theme of Youth Engagement for Global Action, aims to introduce inclusive governance and leadership to the youth.

During the convention, the city’s SK Leaders launched an infodemic campaign that cautions the youth on the proliferation of fake news during COVID-19.

Senator Pia Cayetano, chair of the Senate committee on sustainable development, led a talk on the “Futures Thinking for Future Leaders.”

Aside from this, participants also got a P100 allowance to cover their expenses to attend the digital convention.
