An Asian woman recounted how she was “verbally and almost physically assaulted by a stranger due to the color of [her] skin,” after she apparently refused to have a lunch date with him.
HD Lee was waiting for her food at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles, United States when the man gave her his card and asked her to have lunch with him.
The woman declined the man’s offer by telling him that she is married, which resulted to him spurring racial and gender-related insults at her. Lee showed the escalation of events through a series of videos on her Instagram account yesterday, Aug. 11.
“He then snatched his card back and screamed the most HATEFUL racial slurs and DEGRADING words in the English dictionary towards me,” Lee said. “I am appalled that someone would tell me to ‘Go back to Asia’ after being born and raised in the U.S.”
Lee asked the people around her for help as the man aggressively shouted curse words right at her face.
The man claimed that his name is Frederick Douglas Smith. He also dictated his supposed social security number and his birthday while Lee was filming him.
Smith added that the police “could do no sh*t to you in front of me,” while she asked for help. He then said he was a “contributor to the Obama administration.”
The interaction left Lee breaking down in tears. Eventually, the restaurant’s staff talked to the man and asked him to stay on the other side of the restaurant.
Lee expressed her disappointment to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) after it told her that “there’s NOTHING they can do to address the situation.”
The woman shared the video via social media to “raise awareness that treating everyone with love and kindness is more important now than ever before.”
“I hope and pray that someone can recognize this man so he can get the help that he desperately needs before another person is attacked,” Lee added.
The woman was “disturbed” that it took “nearly two minutes of being degraded” before two of the restaurant’s employees stepped in, as per Next Shark yesterday. She was also all alone during that time.
“They gave him free food and left,” she was quoted as saying. “I waited and cried in the corner for [30 plus] minutes before the police came.”
The police allegedly did not take Lee’s report and told her that this type of occurrence “happens all the time.” Cha Lino/JB
