MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) sent out its condolences for the family of former Interior Secretary Alfredo Lim — who was, in this order, chief of the Quezon City Police, chief of the Western (now Manila) Police District, director of the National Bureau of Investigation, mayor of Manila, before being appointed to the top post of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and then senator.
According to a post by the PNP’s Public Information Office on Facebook, the whole police organization mourns the death of Lim on Saturday.
PNP also noted that Lim’s death coincides with the commemoration of the establishment of the country’s national police service, an institution he served in and guided when he headed the DILG.
“The [PNP] joins the Filipino nation in mourning the untimely demise of a national leader, former senator and DILG secretary Alfredo S. Lim. We extend our deepest condolences to his families and offer our comforting thoughts and prayers in this time of bereavement,” PNP-PIO said.
“General Lim passed on to the great beyond on the same day that the PNP commemorates the establishment of the Police Service in the Philippines […] He must be really destined to go this way in the name of the profession that he truly loved and cherished,” it added.
Lim’s death was confirmed on Saturday after rumors spread last week that his health had been deteriorating.
Incumbent Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, who was once Lim’s vice mayor, said that the public servant died due to infection of the latest coronavirus strain.
Lim was 90.
Lim was known for his moniker “Dirty Harry” for his tough stance against crime and drugs.
