Teachers and educators who have lost their jobs because of the coronavirus pandemic can apply to become “mobile tutors” through the Makati City government’s “Dyipni Makati” project. Under the project, mobile learning hubs will be deployed to the different barangays in the city to assist students and their parents in coping with the new “blended learning” mode when classes open on Aug. 24.

Each hub will be manned by the hired professional teachers, teaching assistants or youth volunteers who will provide tutorials. They will be equipped with laptops and internet connection, including books and supplementary materials that parents can borrow.

“This project seeks to address inadequacies that may hamper the successful implementation of the blended learning approach. It is primarily intended for students who lack gadgets and other learning tools, and parents who have difficulty guiding and teaching their children using the self-directed learning modules,” Mayor Abby Binay said in a statement.

According to Binay, the hubs will also serve as a venue for learning and reading activities, book donation drives and other projects that promote reading in communities.

Learner’s package

To implement the blended learning approach, the city government will provide the around 80,000 public students with a learner’s package that includes printed and online modules, a daily four-hour internet load, flash drives containing learning modules and two washable face masks.

Makati officials have also promised to distribute all of the 2,500 brand-new laptops with free internet load to all public school teachers from elementary to senior high school by October, in time for World Teacher’s Day. INQ
