Siargao resto’s woven pizza boxes: Eco-friendly livelihood for Tangbo weavers

MANILA, Philippines As Filipinos struggle economically with quarantine restrictions due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, one restaurant in Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte is helping affected locals cope with the crisis via an innovative and environment-friendly initiative.

In a Facebook post, Aqwa Siargao said it has started to use pizza boxes made of woven natural leaves to give Tangbo weavers a source of income amid the global health emergency.

“We are proud to share that we are now using an eco-friendly take away pizza container for our customers,” Aqwa Siargao said.

The beachfront bar and restaurant located in the country’s surfing capital also said that the initiative is seen to combat the proliferation of plastic waste and promote sustainability.

“As the first one to use this for take away in Siargao, we would be happy to see this initiative happening in the whole island,”  Aqwa Siargao added.
