On July 31, 1946, Philippine Airlines became the first Asian airline to cross the Pacific Ocean when it operated a chartered Douglas DC-4 to ferry home 40 American servicemen to California from Nielson Airport in Makati, with fueling stops at Guam, Wake Island, Johnston Atoll and Honolulu.
