On July 31, 1946, Philippine Airlines became the first Asian airline to cross the Pacific Ocean when it operated a chartered Douglas DC-4 to ferry home 40 American servicemen to California from Nielson Airport in Makati, with fueling stops at Guam, Wake Island, Johnston Atoll and Honolulu. The Nielson Tower, the only remaining structure from the airport, now houses the Filipinas Heritage Library. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
