3 dead in 2 attacks in as many days in Negros Oriental city

DUMAGUETE CITY—Three people were killed in separate gun attacks in Guihulngan City in the northern part of Negros Oriental province.

Two hog traders—Jimmer Fundador and Romeo Dungo-an—were shot dead by yet unidentified gunmen in at the village of Magsaysay on Tuesday (July 21).

Initial police reports said the traders were ambushed and shot multiple times.

They were both rushed to the Guihulngan District Hospital but were declared dead on arrival there.

Their murder came exactly three years after five Guihulngan City policemen, including their then chief of police Senior Supt. Arnel Arpon, were ambushed and killed by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas in the exact same area on July 21, 2017.

On Wednesday (July 22), a tricycle driver was also shot dead at the village of Malusay.

Police identified the tricycle driver as Joel Daza, 51, a resident of Poblacion village in Guihulngan.

Early results of a police investigation said Daza was driving his tricycle when he was flagged down by two still unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen.

The assassins shot Daza several times, killing him on the spot.

Three empty cartridges and a slug from a caliber .45 pistol were recovered from the crime scene.

Police have yet to identify the assailants in the two cases and determine the motives for the attacks.
