P1,000 monthly electricity allowance pushed

MANILA, Philippines — Business enterprises should be mandated to provide at least P1,000 in monthly electricity allowance to their employees who have been forced to work from their homes due the COVID-19 pandemic, Sen. Francis Tolentino on Sunday said.

Tolentino, a member of the Senate energy committee, said employers could deduct the fringe benefit from the taxes they would pay the government.

He cited a similar cash incentive being given out by Australian companies.

Labor unions in India had also demanded such allowance.

Tolentino said he would file a bill on Monday institutionalizing the electricity allowance for individuals working from home.
