MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has recorded more than 54,000 cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while the number of recoveries has surpassed the 14,000 mark.
In an update from the Department of Health on Saturday, 1,387 new cases of the coronavirus disease were reported, raising the total tally nationwide to 54,222.
Of the 1,387 latest cases, 918 are fresh cases while 469 are late cases.
DOH also documented 807 more recoveries from the disease. This brings the total number of recoveries in the Philippines to 14,037.
Meanwhile, 12 more people have died from the disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,372.
The novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, first emerged in Wuhan City, in the Hubei province of China in December 2019.
For most people, the new virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough but for older people and for people with underlying health problems, it can cause more serious illnesses such as pneumonia, and death.
