BI installs more CCTVs in int’l airports

MANILA, Philippines — Over a hundred CCTV cameras have been installed in the country’s international airports in a bid to better monitor passengers and prevent corruption among immigration personnel.

The Bureau of Immigration on Thursday said the CCTV cameras were installed at Terminals 2 and 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and Clark International Airport.

“These CCTVs are effective deterrents against corruption as our officers will now be wary and discouraged to commit irregularities as all their actions will surely be caught on camera,” the BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said in a statement.

The CCTVs operate 24 hours daily in all immigration counters at the arrival and departure areas of the airports, BI Port Operations Acting Chief Grifton Medina said.

The BI will likewise rehabilitate old CCTV cameras in Naia Terminal 1, which will be followed by placing new cameras in several other international ports.

The agency will also install CCTV cameras at the Davao International Airport, and in the ports of Iloilo, Kalibo, Puerto Princesa, Bohol-Panglao, Zamboanga, and Subic.

Aside from the ports, several CCTVs were also installed at the BI‘s satellite and extension offices in SM North and Student Visa Section in Quezon City; BI PEZA and SM Aura  in Taguig; and BI Makati, the immigration bureau said.
