MANILA, Philippines — Malabon Mayor Lenlen Oreta has ordered an investigation into reports that some officials in one of the city’s public universities had allegedly extorted money from suppliers and students.
In a statement, the city public information office (PIO) said that Oreta had tasked the Malabon legal office to look into the “negative report” about the City of Malabon University (CMU).
“The mayor first learned about the extortion activities being done by CMU officials that [had] victimized suppliers of school supplies, as well as their students,” it added. Those found responsible would be charged, according to Oreta.
Also to be investigated were other supposed anomalies, including the tampering of students’ enrollment documents.
Bong Padua, city PIO chief, said the local government had yet to receive additional information about the complaints.
